2008 Grid Expedition

6 & 2M Portable Station.

3 elements on 6M at 23' and 5 elements on 2M at 18'.

This picture was taken in CN70vs at the Samoa Boat Ramp County Park and Campground located in the Samoa Dunes Recreation Area on a peninsula just west of Eureka, CA (Humboldt County). This campground has no power available, but is very quiet on 6M and 2M and was an excellent location for meteor scatter contacts.

The Operating Position.

On 6M, I typically ran about 225W using an IC-746 and a TE Systems 0552G amplifier (not shown). On 2M, the IC-746 was used barefoot with about 80-100W depending on battery condition. A SignaLink USB interface was used for FSK441 and JT6M contacts. On top of the transceiver is an Array Solutions PowerMaster wattmeter for monitoring power and SWR. When operating off the grid, the motorhome has a 2.8KW generator as well as solar panels for charging the batteries.

At total of 127 6M contacts and 22 2M contacts were made using FSK441, JT6M, CW and SSB. Best DX was 6M CW and SSB contacts with KH7Y in BK29 from CN71. Of special note were three 6M JT6M contacts with W9RPM in EN43jt from CN70vs, CN71vs and CN73vm. These three contacts are of special interest because they exhibited the short ping characteristics of meteor scatter contacts but at 1640-1690 miles were further than the generally accepted maximum distance for meteor scatter contacts. Since they occurred at or near the peak of the Perseids meteor shower, perhaps they were multi-hop meteor scatter contacts. It also possible that some form of sporadic E or tropo enhancement extended the range beyond the normal maximum.
